The College Mission Statement

1. AIM : To assist in the education of the school community in the traditions, beliefs and practices of the Catholic faith in preparation for life.

  1. That the school community be provided with opportunities to come to know Christ through the teaching of the Gospel message.
    • That there be a coordinated Religious Education program in years 8-12 at the school.
    • That people from outside the school community be fully utilised to achieve the objective.
    • That all staff and parents be given the opportunity to share their experience by being involved in the Religious Education program.
  2. That the College provide channels for faith development.
    • That a permanent chapel exist within the school environment.
    • That students be exposed to the faith commitment of other people.
    • That at the college time be set aside for prayer and the celebration of the sacraments.
    • That a community service program exist at the college for all year levels
    • That there be a school Chaplain.
    • That we encourage students to participate in Church based youth organisations.
    • That opportunities be provided for students to be actively involved in the preparation and conducting of liturgical celebrations.
    • That the community encourage participation in parish activities.
  3. That an atmosphere of family community exist at the College.
    • That we seek to engender respect and concern for each individual in the community.
    • That we endeavour to build personal relationships by encouraging and facilitating cooperation, understanding and good communication between staff, students and parents.
    • Importance is placed on the sense of belonging and we attempt to make all members of our community feel at home.

2. AIM :To encourage all members of the school community to develop their self-worth, ability and potential.

  1. That the members of the school community be able to appreciate their different cultural origins and see the richness in this diversity.
    • That the Junior Secondary Curriculum incorporate a study of the cultural history of Australia.
    • That the staff seek an understanding of the cultural differences that exist in the student body.
    • That the curriculum reflect the nature of the school community and of the Australian society.
    • That the staff promote mutual respect among the students.
  2. That there be specific structures at the school that assist each student in developing his self worth, ability and potential.
    • That there be a pastoral care program at the college
    • That the pastoral care program be designed so as to best ensure the welfare of all members of the school community.
    • That all staff members have the opportunity to contribute to the program.
    • That discipline structures at the college reflect the pastoral and community nature of the school.
  3. That the Curriculum seek to cater for individual interest.
    • That the school offer a variety of clubs and activities.
    • That the Curriculum gradually induct students into a choice of subjects.
  4. That the Curriculum allow for individual progression
    • That the teachers adopt methods and strategies so as to provide a realistic challenge to each student.
  5. That the school recognise that students have a valuable contribution to make to the conduct and development of its policies and practice.
    • That students be given certain management roles and responsibilities in the school.
    • That the school identify those aspects of school management which can be appropriately assigned to students.
    • That there be an elected Students Representative Council with formal access to Headmaster and Staff.
    • That students receive appropriate guidance and encouragement in the discharge of their responsibilities.

3. AIM : To offer a curriculum that caters for students of a wide range of abilities, interests and backgrounds.

  1. That a curriculum be offered that is comprehensive in scope.
    • That students will be able to study a course that suits them in academic, social, cultural, technical and physical aspects.
    • That the course satisfies basic literacy, numeracy and communications needs.
  2. That student abilities and interests be ascertained.
    • That students will be tested on a number of occasions during their schooling to ascertain their ability in specific areas.
  3. That students have the possibility of choosing subjects that suit their ability and interests.
    • That each student will be encouraged to choose a course that ensures his development in basic intellectual, social and physical areas.
  4. That each faculty develops courses that cater for a wide range of abilities and student outcomes.
    • That each student will achieve competence in the basic skills, concepts and knowledge in each subject.
    • That work be offered in every subject that is commensurate with the ability of each student.
    • That each student will undertake a variety of tasks designed to increase his self confidence, sense of worth and self respect.
    • That each student will gain from every subject an increased understanding of the nature and demands of life after school.
    • That each student will gain a measure of success, a sense of achievement and a sense of self worth from every subject they take.
  5. That counselling be offered for students to aid them in their subject choices.
    • That each student will meet with his class teacher at least once a term to discuss progress and course selection for the following year.
    • That each student will receive by the end of Term Three a subject outline for each possible subject offering for the following year.

4. AIM : To recognise and promote the place of parents as the prime educators of their sons and to promote their involvement in the life of Christian Brothers College.

  1. That parents be encouraged to engage in ongoing dialogue with the school regarding their son’s progress in all aspects of school life.
    • That regular structured parent/teacher evenings be conducted
    • That two-way communication between teacher and parent on faith, study and general curriculum be part of the planning of parent/teacher events.
    • That parents be invited to discuss with the staff of the College any matters concerning their son’s welfare, as the need arises.
    • That a written report of the student’s progress be conveyed to the parents at least three times a year.
    • That parents be contacted by the school when any personal matter arises concerning their son’s progress or behaviour.
    • That the school diary be used frequently as a means of communication between teachers and parents.
  2. That effective written communications from the school to parents in relation to the day to day life of the College occur regularly.
    • That parents be contacted every week of the school year via a newsletter to inform them of current affairs and coming events.
    • That the weekly newsletter be open to contributions from all members of the school community and be edited by the Headmaster.
    • That the weekly newsletter convey a specific regular Christian message.
  3. That parent contact with the school be as pleasant and mutually beneficial as possible.
    • That all parents be treated with courtesy and understanding by all the College staff.
    • That there be provision for members of staff to converse with non-English speaking parents.
    • That a suitable area be set aside within the school for parent/teacher interviews.
  4. That parents be encouraged to help in the development of school facilities.
    • That the social and fund raising events of the Parents and Friends Association, Sports Auxiliaries and other parent groups be supported and facilitated by the school.
    • That College staff support these functions by promoting and attending them.
    • That Staff should be considered guests of the College at these activities.
  5. That parents be encouraged to attend formal school functions.
    • That parents receive advance notice of coming functions via the newsletter.
    • That some functions be held in the evening or on the weekends to enable all parents to attend.
    • That parents be personally and formally invited to the end of year Mass.
  6. That parents be assisted in assuming their role in the community life of the College.
    • That the school facilitate and promote all parent organised social activities.
    • That parents be encouraged to attend extra-curricular activities, in which their sons are involved, as a means of meeting staff and other parents.
    • That the voluntary help of parents in the routine running of the school be encouraged (eg canteen, learning assistance program, library, clothing store, camps, Religious Education, sport, etc.).
    • That parents be encouraged to join with the rest of the school community in the development of the school and its environment.
    • That parents be encouraged to help with the training, coaching, umpiring managing and transportation of their son’s sporting teams.
