Careers
Guidance and Counselling
Br Michael Flaherty
CBC students have daily access
to Counsellors and are free to make arrangements to speak
to them confidentially about career courses, subject selection,
study difficulties and personal concerns. In the Careers' Centre
and the counselling rooms there is a wide range of career information.
The Careers' Notice Boards display materials sent regularly
to the College relating to careers and study courses. The Daily
News Bulletin and the weekly Newsletter sent home each Wednesday
have career guidance and related notices. The Job Guide, published
each year, is especially helpful.

A Careers Night is held during
Term 3 at CBC or SAC (in alternate years). All students have
access to OZJAC, a comprehensive career information computer
programme which is updated twice a year. CBC is close to the
Careers' Centre in Currie Street and places in the city helpful
in getting advice and selecting a career. Parents are free to
contact the counsellors or see them when they come to the College
for Parent/Teacher nights and other gatherings.
At CBC career information is readily
available through the Job Guide (a personal copy is given to
each Year 10 student and multiple copies are available for other
students), OZJAC Careers Computer Programme, Futurefinder
and Take Off! and various websites. Publications received at
CBC, if appropriate, are displayed on our ten Careers
Notice Boards. The Daily News bulletin read out in each class
each day contains more up to date information. As well visiting
lecturers from organisations like the Defence Forces and TAFE
Hospitality give presentations to interested students.
A new initiative, V.I.Q (Vocation Interest Questionnaire) has
recently been put into use at CBC. . Students complete a computer
programme questionnaire and from this a Career Guidance Profile
is generated. The counsellors interviewe students to follow
up on the findings.
