Vocational
Education and Training (VET)
Mrs Liz Tidemann, VET Coordinator
The VET program at CBC has been
growing every year since its inception in 1998. From a small
base of 3 TAFE courses Warehousing, Welding and Cookery,
the program has expanded to include TAFE, private providers,
embedded VET units, VET in SACE and new initiatives in school-based
apprenticeships and enterprise education.
All senior students at CBC can access VET either as embedded
or stand-alone, and either as full Certificates or part-qualifications.
VET is used for employment skills, for TAFE and university accreditation,
and personal development. It is also a lot of fun! Students
engage in the practical side of their chosen subject as well
as the theory.
All VET courses emphasise competency
and professionalism and their curriculum content is monitored
by industry to ensure up to date skilling is being imparted
to VET students whether they are in the workplace, still at
school or in tertiary study.
Vocational Education and Training
programs aim to provide:
Relevant nationally recognised competency based training
to students
Pathways for students wishing to enter the workforce
Opportunities for students to experience an industry
without affecting their ability to complete the SACE
CBC offers a varied program across the Vocational Education
and Training (VET) area, providing a bridge between school and
gaining further qualifications in the tertiary sector or in
employment. These VET hours attract credit towards National
Industry Training Packages.
VET courses at CBC
Courses available to students in the Senior Transition year
include:
Electronic Soldering
Electronic Hand Soldering Technology and Introduction to Electronics,
part of Electronics Certificate II
A separate cost is involved
Students complete the course onsite at CBC.
Students work at electronics workstations installed in a mobile
classroom supplied by Regency Institute of TAFE. They cover
all aspects of hand soldering and desoldering to industry standards.
This is a base level qualification for the electronics assembly
and manufacturing industry and has a good employment path. The
students will also achieve 1 SACE unit.
Commercial Cookery (Kitchen Operations)
Certificate I (Kitchen Operations)
A separate cost is involved
Students complete the course after school hours onsite at CBC.
Students are prepared for employment in commercial kitchens
and also for the hospitality industry in general. The course
includes modules that cover kitchen hygiene, preparing appetisers,
salads and sandwiches and the proper storage of food. This is
a highly practical course taught by chefs in the commercial
kitchens at CBC.
Engineering (Automotive)
Certificate I in Automotive
(Mechanical - light vehicle)
A separate cost is involved
Students complete the course on school days onsite at CBC.
Students study units relating to the career path of an automotive
mechanic. They undertake practical and theory work in a mechanics
workshop and classroom with full training equipment and facilities.
Distribution (Warehousing)
Warehousing AQF Level 1 (including
Forklift License Course)
A separate cost is involved
Students complete the course offsite on selected days.
This course can lead students to careers in transport, warehousing,
spare parts, stock control, management and logistics. All aspects
of the distribution industry are covered including forklift
training in a simulated warehouse
environment.
Employment Skills Training
A separate cost is involved
Students complete the course as part of the Work Education subject.
This course was first nationally accredited through TAFE at
the beginning of 2001, and was trialled from the beginning of
that year at CBC. It was originally put into place to provide
an alternative pathway for students who were experiencing difficulty
accessing the mainstream curriculum and who were achieving limited
success in core subjects. The course aims to:
Consolidate basic core competencies
Develop work-related skills
Enhance interpersonal skills
Develop vocational pathways
A First Aid Certificate is also a part of this course.
In addition to the class and community investigation work, the
students also undertake work placements of varying complexities
depending upon their experience and confidence.
When all elements of the course are complete, the student will
achieve:
A nationally accredited Certificate 1 course
3 SACE units
The following courses are delivered
with other schools in our VET cluster and are offered through
INAP (Inner Northern Adelaide Partnership) and coordinated at
CBC.
