of Education (S.A.C.E.)
Mr Gary Jalleh, Director of Studies

Year 11 and 12

The students undertaking Year 11 and 12 are beyond the compulsory years of schooling and they are faced with many pathways with respect to their vocation in life. As such there is an assumption made that because they have chosen to continue with their education beyond the compulsory years, these students have expressed an intention to take some definite control of the pathway of their life journey. In terms of careers this may lead to a university, TAFE, or the workforce. The CBC community will actively support them and wish them every success. The purpose of this Handbook is to ensure that the senior students and their parents are informed of the courses of study offered at the College.

A. Enrol in 22 units of study and gain a grade of "Satisfactory Achievement" in 16 units and the remaining number (up to 6) to be at least "Recorded Achievement" over at least two years.

A one unit course represents a semester or half year of study. A two unit course represents two semesters or a full year of study.
There are three possible grades awarded for a semester topic.
(i) Students attain Satisfactory Achievement (SA) if they undertake work, including assessment activities, and reach the satisfactory level specified for the subject.
(ii) They attain Recorded Achievement (RA) if they undertake work, including assessment activities specified for the subject.

C. Satisfy the Writing-Based Literacy Assessment (WBLA).
(back to quick jump menu)

As a fundamental requirement of the SACE, each student must demonstrate a competent degree of literacy. As such, students must record "Satisfactory Achievement" in the Writing-Based Literacy Assessment to be awarded the SACE.

1. Features of WBLA.

  • It is based only on writing.
  • The standard of assessment is based upon a level of competence in writing which can be reasonably expected at Stage 1 level.
  • It is context-based. This means that it uses materials gathered from a student's work drawn across the curriculum during the normal course of study, so as to provide a broad picture of the student as a writer.

2. Requirements of WBLA.

  • A student must submit a folio containing four pieces of writing in the English language.
  • Each piece must be a minimum of 250 words, with at least three in continuous prose.
  • All work to be submitted must be verified by a teacher including work done on a word processor, and must have a context sheet.
  • To make this assessment broad-based the four pieces must include:
  • - 1 piece from: English or English as a Second Language.
    - 1 piece from: the Mathematics / Science / Technology classification of Stage 1 studies*.
    - 1 piece from: the Arts / Humanities / Social and Cultural classification of Stage 1 studies*.
    - 1 piece from any area of study.
    * or the equivalent category at Stage 2.

3. Criteria for Assessment

  • Each folio will be assessed as either Satisfactory or RNM (Requirements Not Met).
  • For a folio to be assessed as Satisfactory, all 4 pieces of writing must be deemed as Satisfactory.
  • Students who do not gain a Satisfactory result in a particular category will be required to resubmit a new piece of work for that category.
  • The new piece of work may not include a re-drafted version of the piece that did not satisfy requirements in the previous submission.

4. WBLA deadline
All Senior Years students must submit their pieces of work to the WBLA panel of teachers by Week 1, Term 3.

Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS)
(back to quick jump menu)

Each university course has prescribed HESS requirements. To be eligible for selection to a university course students must include among their Stage 2 selection four subjects which belong to the designated HESS groups and obtain at least an RA in each of these subjects. HESS requirements are currently defined as follows:
HESS General: The four HESS may be either any PES and / or PAS. The fifth subject may be PES, PAS or SAS.
HESS Restricted: The four HESS may be either any PES and / or any PAS and / or any 2 unit SAS.
