Assessment
Mr Gary Jalleh, Director of Studies
College Assessment Policy
The principles which underpin the College Assessment Policy
are:
- Fairness to all students.
- Integrity of assessment procedures.
Deadlines
The purpose of deadlines is to assist students with their
own planning and the development of personal organisational skills. Furthermore it is
unfair to those students who have met the deadlines to have others awarded extra time
without good reason. The internal policy of CBC for deadlines is as follows:
1. That work not presented by the deadline be awarded a
zero for the purposes of calculating a school assessment component for SSABSA.
2. That deadlines be realistic and take into account such
pressures as camps, retreats etc.
3. That deadlines will be negotiable on the following
grounds:
- Illness (long term).
- Compassion (eg. family illness, bereavement).
- Misadventure (eg. loss, theft).
4. That extensions will be negotiated in the following
manner:
- Students are expected to negotiate an extended deadline.
- Negotiations for an extension must be initiated at least 24
hours prior to the submission deadline except in the case of genuine and unforeseen
absence on the submission deadline.
- Any application for an extension must be substantiated by
appropriate documentation, viz. doctor's certificate or a letter from a parent / guardian
detailing the reasons underlying the request.
- Failure to meet any new deadline will result in a zero being
awarded.
- In subjects where a folio of work is to be presented for
moderation, students will not be permitted to include work which was submitted after the
negotiated submission deadline.
- The Year 11 and 12 Coordinators and the Director of Studies
will oversee this policy to ensure standards are maintained across the different faculties
and they will act as mediator if any disputes occur.
Absence from Timed Tests
The student will be awarded a zero unless a genuine reason
for absence is verified by a doctor's certificate or a letter from a parent / guardian.
The teacher's discretion will decide the appropriate method
of assessing the student. The teacher may:
- Administer the same test.
- Administer a comparable test.
- Employ an alternative assessment instrument.
- Mark the student 'ABSENT' on assessment record.
Cheating
The term 'cheating' is meant to encompass all those means
by which a student may seek to gain an unfair advantage over other students, or to claim
authorship for material which is not his own.
In all its forms cheating is completely unacceptable and
any piece of work which falls within the above definition will be awarded a zero. It
should be noted that repeated cheating would make it difficult for the teacher to provide
a reliable school assessment mark to SSABSA for the offending student.
