This page gives an idea of the subjects and type of options that a senior student at C.B.C. has. The table below shows the subject areas offered. Click on the desired area to go where it is described, otherwise scroll down all the areas at leisure.

Alternatively e-mail us your details along with which Curriculum handbook you need, (Middle Schooling in Years 8 and 9, Senior Transition in Year 10 or the Senior Years of Year 11 and 12) and we will post it to you.

Religion

The first table seen below merely serves to indicate the compulsory nature of Religious Education at CBC, the (1) or (2) seen along side some of the senior classes indicate if the course is taken over one Semester, (6 months), or the whole year, 2 semester course.

English (back to quick jump menu)
Some form of English is compulsory until year 11. In year 11 there are three streams of english, each varying in complexity and placing a different focus on the various components of the subject. English one tends to be Literacy based and leads onto Stage 2 Publically Examined English. Offered also is English as a Second Language (ESL) course. This is meant for students whose main language in not English.

Drama/Music (back to quick jump menu)
Year 8 drama eventually leads to Year 12 drama. It is part of a subject group called performing Arts and as such is closely tied in with Music. At year 8 level students do 1 semester of music and then 1 semester of drama. These two then become elective choices at year 9 level. Music may also be studied off-campus in laboratories housed 100 metres from the senior school campus. The school has its own band which is often used at school functions.

Main stream mathematics is compulsory until year 11. On reaching Year 11 students then have an option of continuing on with 'higher' mathematics or pursuing a business focused mathematics. There is a Learning Assisted Mathematics programme which exists from year 8 onwards. Students having difficulties with mathematics are withdrawn from the larger group and given one on one attention.

Science commences in year 8 and is compulsory to year 10. At year 10 level science is taught in discrete units of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geology. Depending on a students aptitude and like of the particular branch of science he may then specialise in year 11 and 12.

Society and Environment (back to quick jump menu)
The Studies of Society and Environment, by definition, cover many of the human issues that concern society. In this regards they blend in with the Religious Studies that the students undertake in parallel fashion. At year 11 compulsory Society and Environment culimates in Australian Studies. Various options of social science are also offered at year 11 level.

Physical Education (back to quick jump menu)
Apart from the huge area of general sport, physical education looks at the issues of sport in society, nutrition, a balanced and healthy lifestyle. This area of study is compulsory till the end of year 10, from then it can be chosen as an elective, leading onto PAS Physical Education.

Information Technology (back to quick jump menu)
Computing is a compulsory service subject in years 8 and 9. Computing across the curriculum is promoted at all levels within specific subject areas. Students can further elect to do Computing at year 10, 11 and 12 to a PES subject. At these higher levels the subject comprises of System Analysis and is known as Information Technology.

Art / Design / Technology (back to quick jump menu)
This area encompasses many subjects, including computing, (Information Technology), and drama, (Preforming Arts), which have been reported elsewhere. Art/Craft and Technology have their own seperate co-ordinators, however technology is entwined with Art and Craft in the junior secondary years and then emerges with its own elective choices at year 11 and 12. All the options available under technology, such as Mechanics, Furniture Making, Controlled Technology etc., have not been listed here. The new Food Technology course is offered to all Middle School students and leads to studying Home Economics in SACE off campus.

Business Studies (back to quick jump menu)
Business Studies is first offered at year 10 level as an elective. Students having completed this elective are then able to choose the subject and its elective off-shoots to a PES level. Not mentioned here but certainly offered is Legal Studies at Year 12. This is one of the more successful areas of studies undertaken at C.B.C. by students.

Italian,German and Vietnamese are electives at year eight level. All of these subjects can continue through to a year 12 PES level, providing there are adequate students enrolled in them. Vietnamese in Stages 1 and 2 are completed off campus.
